    What is a Sociable City?

A Sociable City invests in the safety and vibrancy of the nighttime economy by nurturing hospitality zones where people of diverse ages, incomes and lifestyles unite as a community to share food, beverages, music and dance in public venues.

Core Elements of a Hospitality Zone:

    • Music and Entertainment: Local talent and venues supported by public policy and economic incentives
    • Service, Security and Safety: Trained management and staff to provide quality products and service in safe environments
    • Multi-use Sidewalks: Vendors, entertainers, outdoor seating and kiosks create activity and vibrancy
    • Community Policing: Compliance through on-going communication, collaboration and education
    • Integrated Transportation Systems: Appropriate public transportation to match nighttime demand
    • Quality of Life: Zoning, use codes, allocation of services and social marketing to manage noise, litter, trash and disorder

Why Your City Should Invest in the Nighttime Economy

Well planned and managed nightlife can offer the following benefits to your city:

    • Reduce crime with more coordinated eyes and ears monitoring the street
    • Maximize existing city resources by increasing sales, tax revenue and general fund contributions
    • Grow city service budget by attracting a larger base of residents and businesses
    • Match service allocation with peak-time demand
    • Revitalize business districts by using restaurants and nightlife to drive initial foot traffic
    • Draw a creative class of innovators and entrepreneurs to develop sustainable business
    • Provide a spectrum of social experiences for all ages and lifestyles
    • Propel relocation of corporate headquarters and research facilities seeking to recruit the creative class
    • Expand tourism and convention trade
    • Capture post-event markets generated by stadiums and theatres to support local businesses
    • Attract students and faculty for local colleges and universities
    • Create jobs and careers in hospitality
