Representing restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and related businesses across all five boroughs, the Alliance acts as an industry voice, offering education, events, and policy advocacy. Its independence from state associations allows it to focus exclusively on city specific issues and respond quickly to emerging challenges.
Post COVID Recovery Challenges: New York City's restaurants and nightlife continue to be challenged by changes since COVID, including rising insurance costs, complex employment regulations, and declining tourism driven by global instability and increased competition from other cities. He emphasized the importance of sustained advocacy to address these issues and provide owners with the tools needed to adapt.
Nightlife and Transportation Policy: Serving on multiple city committees and maintaining regular communication with the mayor’s office, Andrew underscored the need for reliable 24/7 public transit and workforce support, including childcare. He reiterated New York’s position as a global leader in nightlife and dining and stressed the importance of policies that strengthen—rather than hinder—these sectors.
Nightlife Governance Structure: The discussion focused on how the Office of Nightlife, the Nightlife Advisory Board, and the Hospitality Alliance function as a “three legged stool” in managing and supporting the city’s nighttime economy. Andrew outlined the responsibilities of each entity and noted his involvement in establishing the Office of Nightlife and chairing the Advisory Board.
Regulatory Evolution: They discussed the historical trajectory of nightlife and alcohol regulations, from post Prohibition restrictions to today’s more supportive framework. While progress has been made through reduced fines and streamlined rules, significant challenges remain, including outdated alcohol regulations. Andrew emphasized the continued need for regulatory modernization, advocacy, and cross city knowledge sharing to foster more vibrant and accessible social spaces.
